The 40th annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place on Wednesday. The show revisited some iconic moments throughout the night, including Madonna’s debut performance in 1984.

This year, rising stars like Benson Boone and Teddy Swims made their VMA debuts, while others premiered new music. Notably, Sabrina Carpenter, who made her MTV VMA debut during last year’s pre-show, was bumped up to the main show for 2024.
Chapel Roan won Best New Artist and played “Good Luck, Babe!”
Shawn Mendes debuted a new song from his upcoming album.
Benson Boone, nominated for Best New Artist, made his VMAs debut showcasing his signature backflips.
And finally, Teddy Swims performed multiple times before the commercial breaks from the Doritos Extended Play Stage.
