Ed Sheeran’s new album Play drops Friday, and he says his favorite track is “Sapphire.” For Ed, being an artist means being a fan of your own music, and this one feels “infectious.”
He created Play alongside a companion project called Rewind, which is two months away from being finished and scheduled for release in about 18 months.
Sheeran admits he intentionally included songs on Play that may never be singles but are destined to become fan favorites. He’s also focused on pushing himself creatively, explaining, “Comfort is the death of anything interesting.” This next chapter, he says, is fun and upbeat.
Fresh off his Mathematics Tour, Ed is gearing up for the Loop Tour. He would have continued his “in-the-round” stage forever, but logistically it couldn’t travel to places like South America or South Africa—so the new loop stage makes touring more flexible.
Away from the stage, Sheeran lights up when talking about his daughters. He can’t wait to share pop culture moments with them, like watching The Empire Strikes Back, just to see their reaction to the iconic “Luke, I am your father” moment. He’s also looking forward to family nights with Lord of the Rings movies and reading Harry Potter aloud. The only thing he doesn’t enjoy? Peppa Pig. He says, “She isn’t a very nice pig.” His kids, he adds, have made him more nostalgic in his writing.
In other Ed news, he cleared up the rumors that he’s moving to the United States on his Instagram story, telling fans that he’s relocating while he’s on tour.
Ed will perform live on TikTok on September 13th to celebrate the album’s release.
@edsheeran I did a TikTok live mid covid pandemic to an empty stadium. I loved it, but now I wanna do it to an actual crowd. My album comes out on the 12, gig is on the 13th. Get learning the songs and we’ll sing together in New York, can’t wait. More info in my bulletin board #newmusic ♬ Camera – Ed Sheeran
