Smokey Robinson Sues Rape Accusers For Defamation And Elder Abuse
Smokey Robinson has filed a $500 million cross-complaint against his four former housekeepers, alleging defamation and elder abuse after they sued him for sexual harassment and rape. The 85-year-old Motown legend claims the women, who had previously received substantial gifts and were treated as family during their employment, conspired with their lawyer to fabricate their claims for extortion. “The only sinister acts that occurred here were those of plaintiffs and their counsel by slandering the Robinsons’ good names and reputations,” the new cross-complaint states. The lawsuit by the housekeepers, seeking $50 million in damages, alleges instances of rape and sexual assault, with some citing fear of job loss and immigration-related consequences as reasons for not reporting the abuse earlier. Gwen Stefani And Blake Shelton’s AMAs Performances Were Pre-Recorded, And Fans Feel “Lied To”
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani's appearances at the American Music Awards on Monday (May 26) drew criticism from fans who felt "lied to" after discovering that their performances were pre-recorded. During the telecast, Shelton performed his new single, “Stay Country or Die Tryin,” and later “returned” to introduce his wife, Stefani, who performed a medley including her hits “The Sweet Escape” and “Hollaback Girl,” along with the recent single, “Swallow My Tears.” Despite being shown videos of the couple's performances during the live event, attendees revealed in a series of TikTok videos that the artists were not physically present on stage, sparking disappointment among fans. While some fans voiced their expectations to see all previously announced artists perform live, it's not unusual for televised awards shows to include pre-taped segments. While Stefani wasn’t physically at the awards show, she appeared to be “live-tweeting” several of the performances. Representatives for Shelton and Stefani did not immediately respond to the controversy, and the AMAs declined to comment on the issue. (Rolling Stone)

Miley Cyrus Admits She Lied To Godmother Dolly Parton About Songs She Hadn’t Written Yet
During a recent appearance on The Zane Lowe Show, Miley Cyrus confessed to lying about the existence of two new songs after her godmother, Dolly Parton, inquired if she had any hits during a visit two Christmases ago. This fabrication spurred the Grammy-winning pop star to create the songs "More to Lose" and "Every Girl You've Ever Loved" for Cyrus's upcoming album, Something Beautiful. Cyrus and her songwriting partner Michael Pollack set a quick deadline for themselves to write the songs, with that sense of urgency helping fuel their creativity. Cyrus eventually shared “More to Lose” with Parton, who immediately challenged her by asking, “Got any more?” Cyrus credits her godmother's inquiry as the driving force behind their creation, admitting, “I hadn’t even written the songs yet, so all because of her did those two songs ever get created.” Something Beautiful features both Parton-inspired songs, and is set to be released on May 30 along with an accompanying film. UMG Files Dismissal Of Drake’s “Astonishing’ Amended Lawsuit Over Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”
On Wednesday (May 7), Universal Music Group filed a motion to dismiss Drake's amended defamation lawsuit regarding Kendrick Lamar's song, "Not Like Us." The Canadian rapper is accusing UMG – his and Lamar's record label – of intentionally defaming him through their promotion of the track. UMG's lawyers claim that in the amended complaint, Drake “removed obviously false factual allegations” while adding that the “new allegations are astonishing.” The company claims that the lawsuit only serves as an attack on the commercial and creative success of Lamar’s chart-topping song, rather than addressing the content of the lyrics. In a separate statement, a UMG spokesperson said, “Drake’s lawyers believe that when Drake willingly participates in a performative rap-battle of music and poetry, he can be ‘defamed’ even though he engages in the exact same form of creative expression.” (Variety)

Sean Combs Sex Trafficking Trial Began On Monday With Jury Selection
Jury selection began on Monday (May 5) for the sex trafficking and racketeering trial of hip-hop mogul Sean Combs. Both the defense team and prosecutors questioned potential jurors about their views on wealthy individuals and Combs' self-professed "swinger" lifestyle. The jury selection process – which involves whittling down 150 prospective jurors into a final pool of 12 men and women and six alternates – is expected to last three days, with opening statements set to begin next week. The trial itself is expected to last at least eight weeks, with Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Entertainment, facing five felony counts and up to 15 years to life in prison if convicted.
The heart of the case alleges that Combs used his billion-dollar business as a "criminal enterprise" for sexual gratification, including the alleged sex trafficking of two former girlfriends. The defense – who already rejected a plea deal – will portray the alleged sexual encounters as consensual and part of Combs' alternative lifestyle. One of the key witnesses against Combs will include his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, who was allegedly sex trafficked between 2008 and 2018, with a 2016 surveillance video surfacing last year of Combs violently assaulting Ventura in a California hotel. Beyoncé Sent Cease-And-Desist Letter Over Sphere Footage Featuring In ‘Cowboy Carter’ Tour
The owner of the Sphere has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Beyoncé regarding footage of the singer picking up a version of the iconic Las Vegas venue that is shown during her current Cowboy Carter Tour. “Beyoncé — many orders of magnitude larger than the Sphere venue — leans over, picks up the venue, and looms over it,” the letter reads, which has led to “significant speculation that Beyoncé will end her tour with a Sphere residency.” The letter alleges that the footage – which is featured in an interlude for Beyoncé's show – is unauthorized and used “without permission,” and has upset Sphere Entertainment Group's CEO, James Dolan, who has tried to book the 35-time Grammy winner at his venue. Despite those past negotiations, Beyoncé will instead bring her Cowboy Carter Tour to Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on July 25-26. Beyoncé launched her highly-anticipated tour in Los Angeles on Monday, April 28. (Rolling Stone)
