Since its premiere on Netflix in late March, people have been obsessed with Tiger King. But one of the show’s stars isn’t happy with the exposure.
Carol Baskin was interviewed by the Tampa Bay Times and said that she thought that it would be a documentary about her work and expose animal abuse in the tiger trade.
Baskin says, “I just feel so angry that people have totally missed the point. And the point is these cubs are being abused and exploited and the public is enabling that.”
She also says that she’s been receiving death threats and now fears leaving her home. And although her 67-acre sanctuary isn’t now closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, she still sees people approaching the front door and sees drones flying over the property.
Baskin also says that she doesn’t go on her daily 30 minute bike ride from her home to the sanctuary because it’s too risky and that she’s even been ambushed by fans for the show.
While she normally responds to phone calls from police and vets who discover an injured bobcat or panther, she’s now worried that she might get lured into dangerous situations should she’s respond, “I’ve had to turn my phone off. I can’t tell the real ones from the fake ones because they’re always out of state numbers anyway.”
