Gov. Northam Announces Face Mask Mandate for Virginians

Gov Northam announced Tuesday, May 26th that face coverings will now be required starting Friday, May 29th indoors.

Everyone age 10 and older will be required to wear face coverings in public indoor settings. This includes all brick and mortar retail establishments, all personal care and grooming establishments, inside places where people congregate, on public transportation, and when accessing government services.

People will also be required to wear face coverings when inside food and beverage establishments, except when eating.

There are some exceptions to this requirement. Masks will not be required:

  • While eating or drinking
  • While exercising
  • If you have trouble breathing or are unable to remove the mask without help
  • If your health conditions prohibit wearing a face covering

Enforcement of these requirements will be done through the Virginia Department of Health, rather than law enforcement agencies.
