Pharrell Williams Earns First Emmy Nomination. Five More Hampton Roads Natives Nominated

Nominations for the 72nd Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday, July 28th and names on the list included 6 Hampton Roads natives.  Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, actor/comedian Patton Oswalt, actor Mark Ruffalo, comedian Wanda Sykes and dancer/choreographer Travis Wall are all nominated.

Williams and Hugo are nominated for Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics for the title song of Netflix’s “The Black Godfather,” a documentary about music executive Clarence Avant.

Patton Oswalt, a Portsmouth native, is nominated for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special for his Netflix comedy show “Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything.” This is his 3rd nomination.

Former Virginia Beach resident Mark Ruffalo earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie category for his double role on HBO’s “I Know This Much Is True.”

Another Portsmouth native, Wanda Sykes, earned two nominations, one in the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance category for her “Crank Yankers” character, Gladys, and another in the Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series category for her appearance on Amazon Studios “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as Moms Mabley.

Travis Wall, a dancer/choreographer from Virginia Beach, is nominated for Outstanding Choreography For Variety Or Reality Programming for his routines on “So You Think You Can Dance.” This is his 10th nomination.

The 72nd Emmys will air on Sunday, Sept. 20. The full list of nominations is available online at emmys.com.
