Selena Gomez fans were not happy with the Saved By the Bell reboot after the show used her kidney transplant as the brunt of a joke.
At one point during the sixth episode, two characters argued about the identity of Gomez’s kidney donor and later graffiti in the hallway read, “Does Selena Gomez have a kidney?”
“Respect Selena Gomez” started trending on Saturday night.
Saved by the Bell, that’s disgusting. Selena almost lost her life, jokes about her kidney transplant is NOT FUNNY. Respect Selena Gomez. pic.twitter.com/c8AZbsU1m0

Following the backlash, Peacock, NBC Universal and the show’s executive producers released a statement apologizing for the scene.
“We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC,” said the statement was given to ET on Saturday.
Selena’s friend and kidney donor, Francia Raisa addressed the controversy on Twitter at well saying, “Appreciate the apology but let’s not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall”

As a kidney donor I want to show love and let other donors know that you are not alone. You are seen. You are appreciated. You are so brave and your selfless act is very much appreciated and valued! 🙏🏽
