Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, dies at 99

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II and Britain’s oldest and longest-serving royal spouse in 10 centuries, has died. He was 99.

Philip spent a month in hospital earlier this year before being released on March 16 to return to Windsor Castle.

Buckingham Palace announced he died Friday morning at Windsor Castle.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the statement read. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

He is survived by his wife Queen Elizabeth II and their children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Andrew.
