“Pretty in Pink” was one of the classic teen romantic comedies of the ’80s, right up there with “The Breakfast Club” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.
Years later fans still debate on whether Molly Ringwald’s character, Andie, should have ended up with Duckie. (The answer is YES!)
Well, apparently that was the plan! Only the actor who played Blane McDonough, Andrew McCartney, threatened to quit if that happened.
In a recent interview with the New Yorker, McCartney said, I didn’t read the script until I was on the plane out to Los Angeles, and I was shocked that Blane turned out to be sort of spineless. When I landed, I called [my agent] and said, ‘You gotta get me out of this movie! This guy’s a jerk. He’s just, like, a wimpy loser.’ And they said, ‘Honey, you read the script. You knew what it was.’
So the movie moved forward filing the original ending, but test audiences hated it so much that they BOOED. (sigh, it was a different time) So they re-shot it with Molly and Andrew’s characters ending up together, and it worked.
He says, quote, “The audience seemed to agree that it was better if they got together. It was a fairy tale, so it has to end in a certain way.”
