Hampton Roads’ own Missy Elliott is on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, she was the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the third hip-hop artist overall.

Elliot was presented with a star in the category of “Recording” located on Hollywood Boulevard in front of Amoeba Music.

Elliott tweeted following the ceremony, ” I know a lot of people say (Missy it’s bout Time) but this was the right time (God’s Timing)& I am Grateful! This is a moment that I shall never forget and all the people who have been on this journey with with me I Thank You”

During her acceptance speech, Missy gave a shout-out to her “sisters in hip-hop” and specifically “the godmothers”: Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Sha-Rock, Angie Stone, Roxannne Shanté, Yo-Yo, MC Lyte, and Salt-N-Pepa.

“Y’all are the backs that we stand on,” she said. “Y’all are the foundation.”

Watch her speech below.

Lizzo was on hand to celebrate her idol and said in a heartfelt speech, “I watched you my entire life and I saw a superstar in you, but I also saw myself. And you lived so boldly, and so beautifully, and so unapologetically, and so out loud. You have no idea what you have done for so many Black girls.”

“We love you, we celebrate you, God bless you,” Lizzo said as she tearfully ended her speech. “This is more than deserved. And let us continue to celebrate all of your accomplishments, and all of your influence, forever.”
