Mariah Carey Faces Lawsuit Over “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has dominated the holiday season since its release in 1994.

Almost 30 years later, Andy Stone, better known as Vince Vance from the band Vince Vance and the Valiants, is suing Carey for copyright infringement.

The group released a song called “All I Want for Christmas Is You” back in 1989, five years before Mariah’s song of the same name was released.

The title is the only thing these two songs have in common but Stone feels that Mariah’s song exploited his “popularity and unique style,” and caused confusion with his track.

He also notes that his version received “extensive airplay” during the 1993 Christmas season and is seeking at least $20 million in damages.

Listen to Vince Vance and the Valiants version.

And here is Mariah’s song of the same name.

These two songs aren’t the first to share titles.  VH1 came up with a list of classic songs that share the same title and it includes “Jump,” “Lady,” “Fire,” “Shout,” + more.
