Tom Hanks Weighs In on Chris Evans Replacing Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear: “I Don’t Understand That”

“Lightyear,” Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story” character is in theaters now.  The prequel, which portrays a younger version of Buzz Lightyear is voiced by Chris Evans.

The first original story about the popular movie character does not feature Tom Hanks or Tim Allen, who voiced Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively, in the franchise’s first four films.

Allen recently spoke to EXTRA about the reboot saying, “Lightyear” is a prequel to “Toy Story,” so the other main character Woody is not in it! There’s really no ‘Toy Story,’ Buzz without Woody. It just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy.”

Now Tom Hanks has weighed in.  Hanks stars in the new movie “Elvis,” which is also currently in theaters.

In a new interview, he was asked whether it was “strange to be in theaters opposite a Buzz Lightyear film.”

“How ’bout that? I actually wanted to go head-to-head with Tim Allen, and then they didn’t let Tim Allen do it. I don’t understand that,” Hanks told CinemaBlend.

Hanks added that ultimately he just wants to see people back in theaters. “Here’s the thing: I want to go back in the theater with a bunch of strangers and leave with something in common. That’s what I want to do. And going to see a movie with him, I’m looking forward to that.”
