The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2022 Golden Globe Nominees

The nominees for the Golden Globes were announced on Monday — and as usual, there were a number of snubs and surprises.

Here’s what Variety thinks about the list…

SNUBS

Despite Top Gun: Maverick getting a nod for best picture (drama) and best song, star Tom Cruise was not nomimated. That might have something to do with the Tom returning his three Globe trophies — in protest of the lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Oscars disgrace Will Smith was not nominated for Emancipation, though some believed he had a chance.

Despite rave reviews, Jennifer Lawrence (Causeway) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till) weren’t nominated in the movie actress category.

The big, big budget Amazon series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power got no nominations at all.

No women were nominated in the best director category.

SURPRISES

Brendan Fraser — who in 2018 accused former HFPA president Philip Berk of groping him — was nominated for his performance in The Whale. Fraser has already said he wouldn’t attend the ceremony if nominated.

Julia Roberts was nominated for the little-known Gaslit limited series but not the box-office hit Ticket to Paradise.

After the Globes were criticized for not nominating Zendaya in the first season of Euphoria, she picked up a nod for the second season.

Babylon got “way more nominations than expected,” according to Variety. The period drama, starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Tobey Maguire and Diego Calva, is up for five awards.

Deadline also shared their biggest snubs, including Yellowstone saying “Kevin Costner was recognized, but his terrific co-stars Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley weren’t — and the Paramount Network series was snubbed in the Best Drama category.”

Vulture pointed out that many co-stars were snubbed as well., “Jessica Chastain got a nod for playing Tammy Wynette in George and Tammy, but her partner, Michael Shannon, got zippo. Colin Firth is nominated for his role as Michael Peterson in The Staircase, but Toni Collette, who plays his wife, Kathleen, is not. And from The Patient, Domhnall Gleeson was recognized for his portrayal of a serial killer, but Steve Carell, who shares practically every scene with Gleeson, was overlooked.”

Which snub surprised you the most?
