Jeremy Renner is speaking out for the first time about his near-fatal snowplow accident.

The Marvel star sat down with ABC’s Diane Sawyer for an interview that will air next week. Renner broke over 30 bones and suffered blunt chest trauma when he was run over by his seven-ton snowcat snowplow on New Year’s Day. It happened as he was trying to protect his nephew from the machine — something he says he would do all over again.

 In a preview for the ABC News special for Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview — A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph, the 52-year-old actor says he remembers every second of the accident, especially the pain, and that he should have died but he “chose to survive.”

The special, which airs April 6th at 10 p.m. [ET], also features interviews with family members, including the nephew that Renner saved from being run over by the snowplow. His recovery will be a lengthy one, but Renner says, “I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience but I’ve been refueled and refilled with love and titanium.”
