How to Support Those Affected by the Recent Tornado in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach residents are recovering after a tornado touched down on Sunday, April 30, at approximately 5:58 p.m. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-3 level tornado in the area of River Road and N. Great Neck Road. The path was approximately 4.5 miles long, from the Eastern Branch of the Lynnhaven River to Fort Story, with estimated peak winds of 145 mph.

City officials estimate there has been nearly $16 million in property damage, leaving many families and individuals struggling to recover.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to provide immediate financial assistance to those affected by the tornado. The funds raised will go towards helping families and individuals with immediate needs such as shelter, food, and clothing.

In addition to donating to the GoFundMe page, there are other ways to support the relief efforts. You can donate supplies to local organizations that are helping those affected by the tornado.  Portsmouth-based organization Mercy Chefs announced they will be preparing meals for Virginia Beach residents impacted.  Learn more here.

Volunteers may be needed to help with clean up but the City of Virginia Beach asks that volunteers do not self-deploy until they are contacted and given instructions. VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads will coordinate the necessary volunteers when and if the City requests their assistance.  Learn more here.
