Virginia’s Back-to-School & Emergency Prep Sales Tax Holiday Returns This Weekend

Mark your calendars — Virginia’s annual Sales Tax Holiday is back! From Friday, August 1 at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday, August 3 at 11:59 p.m., you can stock up on qualifying items without paying sales tax.

 

What can you buy tax-free?

School Supplies, Clothing, and Footwear

  • School supplies: $20 or less per item

  • Clothing and footwear: $100 or less per item

Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Items

  • Portable generators: $1,000 or less per item

  • Gas-powered chainsaws: $350 or less per item

  • Chainsaw accessories: $60 or less per item

  • Other eligible hurricane prep items: $60 or less per item

Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ Products

  • Qualifying products for non-commercial, personal use: $2,500 or less per item
